Caring Together - Defying the odds.
Promoting and providing hospice-type care since 1996
by Henry Lock.
I write on the day on which there have been two items of good news from the USA.
Two men have been declared symptom-free of melanoma 4 (skin cancer at its worst) after two years of treatment with genetic modifications of their own immune cells. A red letter day for both for them and for genetic modification in general.

For caring together cooperation is the key !
We are delighted to report increased collaboration between Caring Together, the Spanish Public Health Service and other organizations.
To give you an example: Mr. X is 80 years old and in the later stages of an illness which involves cancer of the prostate which has led to growths in other organs such as his liver, kidneys and bladder. After a period in hospital he has been sent home with no prospect of a cure. Unfortunately Mrs X is 82, frail, and in no condition to attempt the care of her husband on her own.
The pain from such invasions of formerly healthy organs can be incredible. Mr. X needs not only nursing but also medical supervision as the disease progresses. Good as they are, our nurses are not permitted to decide the changing level of medication which alone will help to make the last days of the illness bearable.

A contribution from Caring Together. (Issued 5 March 2006)
In a country such as Spain, where as a result of advances in medicine there has been a considerable increase in the expectation of life, there has been a consequent increase in the number of people with chronic and incurable diseases.
This, along with social, cultural and economic change, has profoundly affected family structure and, as a result, the role of the family in the care of sick people is also in process of change.
Among those whose illnesses are most advanced, or terminal, chronic illnesses have many distressing aspects. They generate pain, both physical and emotional, in around 70% of cases , according to a group of Spanish doctors who published a report on medical attention at the end of life as long ago as 2002.

President Henry Lock has been giving some thought to three controversial topics -
Euthanasia, assisted suicide & living wills in spain!
Issued 26 February 2006
Recently I was foolhardy enough to commit myself to two topics which are often mentioned as if they were good ideas - EUTHANASIA and ASSISTED SUICIDE. This led me on to look at LIVING WILLS ! Being neither a Professor of Spanish Law, nor a medical expert, I invite readers to write to me if they think I have missed the mark.
We can sum up the situation in regard to the first two items in a single sentence: euthanasia is not lawful in Spain, and assisted suicide has not been formally approved by the Establishment either ! It is true to say, though, that they are matters of active debate in Spain as they are elsewhere in Europe.

Attention all doctors:
The key to better terminal care is taking time to listen to the patient!
(issued 14 feb 2006)
Recent studies at the University of Toronto have shown that a quarter of terminal patients felt their care could have been better.
But their impressions improved after a doctor spent time talking to them - according to a BBC NEWS report in 2004..
What’s more, UK Macmillan Cancer Relief commented that better training and suupport was needed to help NHS staff care for the terminally ill.
Patients and families identified need for better control of pain and of shortness of breath, better access to physicians and medical information, more help with the activities of daily living - and shorter waits for nursing care.
