Os envio el manifiesto que redactamos los integrantes del Comite Organizador del XVIII Congreso de la Asociación Estatal de Estudiantes de Enfermería que tuvo lugar el 9,10 y 11 de noviembre de 2006 en Valencia, en el salón de actos del Hospital “La Fe” y que fue organizado por la Escuela de Enfermerí­a “La Fe”.

Manifiesto a favor de los cuidados paliativos

• Todos los seres humanos tenemos derecho a una vida y una muerte digna.
• La muerte no debe ser un tema tabú en nuestra sociedad; no disimulemos la muerte. Dotemos de mayor naturalidad a la muerte.
• La muerte es el coronamiento de la vida, es el momento que la vida alcanza su máxima magnitud, es el momento en el que sabemos quienes somos. Queremos vivir sabiendo que nos vamos a morir, que el morir es condición indispensable de la vida de los seres humanos.
• La muerte intensifica el valor de la vida.
• Queremos dignificar la muerte, que no sea dolorosa o patética
• Queremos tener el derecho a morir de forma serena, con tranquilidad, serenidad y paz.
• Queremos tener el derecho a elegir si queremos morir con o sin dolor, con o sin medios paliativos.
• Si no es posible curar, se ha de intentar que la persona pueda morir en paz. El no poder curar no significa que no haya nada que hacer sino que se abre otra puerta de cuidados, siempre hay algo que hacer.
• El moribundo es el protagonista del proceso de su muerte, por lo tanto se deben respetar sus decisiones y emociones.
• Todos los seres humanos tienen derecho a los cuidados paliativos.

We are sending you the MANIFESTO which the organising committee of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT NURSES produced at their 18th Congress, which took place in the Conference Hall of Hospital “La Fe” in Valencia 9, 10 & 11 November. The Congress was organised by the Nursing School of “La Fe”.

Manifesto in favour of palliative care.

• All human beings have a right to a dignified life and a dignified death.
• Death must not be a subject which is taboo in our society: we cannot disguise death.
• We think of death as most natural.
• Death is the crowning of life, it is the moment when life reaches its apogee, it is the moment in which we understand who we are.
• We want to live knowing that we are going to die, that death is an indispensible condition of the life of human beings.
• Death increases the value of life.
• We want to dignify death, so that it will not be painful or pathetic.
• We want the right to die serenely, in tranquility, serenity and peace.
• We want the right to choose if we’d like to die with or without pain, with or without palliative measures.
• If recovery is not possible we must try to ensure that the person can die in peace.
• If no cure is possible it does not signify that there is nothing to do but that the door to another form of care is opening, that there is always something to do.
• The dying person is the actor in the process of his own death , so his decisions and emotions must be respected.
• All human beings have the right to palliative care.
