- To reduce inhibitions about discussion of death and dying
- To increase awareness that the final phase of life is important to those who are experiencing it.
- To promote three basic freedoms
- freedom from pain
- freedom from indignity
- freedom from loneliness.
- To provide professional services to assist with the home care of patients nearing the end of life.
- To encourage the study of palliative care as a worthwhile career for nurses and doctors.
- To press for increased spending in the health care industry on palliative care for the dying.
- To establish centres of excellence (Hospices) which are able to support palliative care teams in the community.
